"Modern World 12" oil on canvas 24"x48" 2012 private collection
The world is changing—a digital revolution is altering our physical and mental space at a dizzying pace. The easy use and affordable cost of computers has permitted them into all facets of our existence. They are changing the way nearly every American navigates the challenges of their lives. A new landscape is unfolding all around us. It is similar to the analog world we once knew, modeled after it in many ways. But the mechanics governing it operate in different ways and at a different scale. This Modern World is the metaphorical subject of my paintings.
I use computer motherboards, the ‘brains’ of computers, as my source material. I view these incredibly small labyrinths of technology from what you could call ‘street level’ to allow the viewer to feel as if they are inhabitants in its tiny cities. I play with lighting, composition, color, and focus to keep my paintings teetering on the edge of grand landscape and tiny still life.
